Our community elects five Board members who serve four-year terms. The Board members are responsible for the overall operation of the school district. Among its duties, the Board adopts an annual budget, approves all expenditures, establishes policies and regulations, authorizes employment of all personnel, approves curriculum and textbooks, and appoints the Superintendent.

Regular meetings of the Board are normally held at 6:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month in the Board Room of the District Administration Center, 1500 N Avenue. All Regular Board meetings are open to the public.

Meet Our Board Members

Ms. Avalos was first elected to the Governing Board in November 2008. Her present term expires in December 2020. Ms. Avalos is an active member of the National City Community. She has earned the California School Boards Association Masters in Governance Certificate.

Ms. Betancourt-Castañeda was first elected to the Governing Board in November 2014. Her present term expires in December 2018. Ms. Betancourt-Castañeda is an active member of the National City Community.

Mr. Clapper was first elected to the Governing Board in November 2012. His present term expires in December 2020. Mr. Clapper is an active member of the National City Community. He has earned the California School Boards Association Masters in Governance Certificate.

Ms. Dalla was first elected to the Governing Board in November 2014. Her present term expires in December 2018. Ms. Dalla is an active member of the National City Community.

Ms. Sarmiento was first elected to the Governing Board in November 1992 and her present term expires December 2018. She has served on the Board of Directors of the National City Chamber of Commerce, National City Boys and Girls Club, South Bay YMCA, and the American Cancer Society. She is Past-President of Paradise Valley Hospital's Partners for Prevention Coalition and Executive Director of the Sweetwater Alumni Association. She is the recipient of the Key to the City from the Mayor and City Council for her work with the youth and community of National City, the Congressional Citizen of the Month Award, as well as the Optimist Club Volunteer of the Year Award.
